The TSU Purchasing Guide

Where students within this School can obtain the parts they need -

'In-house'

The teaching laboratories maintain a list of 're-cycled' components from earlier projects. Be prepared for the odd faulty device. If you cannot wait for external supplies, then the TSU may be able to assist. Practice your grovelling first.

Local suppliers

Maplin Electronics,
217 High Street,
Guildford,
Surrey,
GU1 3BJ

Ultra convenient. Not as large as the Farnborough store. 20 minutes walk, or a short trip on the bus.

Maplin Electronics,
Unit 8 Solartron Park,
Solartron Road,
Farnborough,
GU14 7QJ

A very wide range of components. Reachable from the University by car in 25 minutes without traffic, or by train to Farnborough main station off Union Street (Farnborough North is more than a mile from Maplin) in about 45 minutes.

RS Components (Crawley Trade Counter),
Unit 2B,
Old Brighton Road,
Lowfield Heath,
Gatwick,
Crawley,
W.Sussex RH11 0PW

01293 611200

About 50 minutes by car or 70 minutes via Gatwick rail station. Open 08:00 to 18:00 Mon. through Fri., also Sat am. RS trade counters do not supply the public so the logistics of this choice are unfavourable.

Mail Order

RS Components Ltd.,
P.O. Box 99,
Corby,
Northants, NN17 9RS

0181 360 8600 (Orders)
01536 402888 (Technical Helpline)

The advantage of RS is that, as a principal supplier to the School, small orders are quickly batched into larger ones of viable size.

Farnell Electronic Components Ltd.,
Canal Road,
Leeds, LS12 2TU

01113 263 6311 (Orders)
01113 263 3411 (Technical Support)

Farnell is stronger than RS for semiconductors and offers improved discount terms.
