High Definition Television (HDTV)

Course Overview

The main aim of the course is to give delegates an overview of technology issues that distinguish high definition TV systems from standard definition. The focus will primarily be on encoding, transmission, receivers and displays, but will also explore production processes where they have a particular impact on subsequent parts of the system.

Who should attend?

Staff of any organisation (e.g. production house, platform operator, carrier, transmission company, CE manufacturer) who need a clear view of the wider context within which their role lies. Some prior knowledge of the principles of digital television will be assumed).

Standards

• Video Standards: 720p, 1080i, etc.
• Conversion: de-interlacing and scaling
• HDMI/HDCP/HDSDI
• DVB-S2

Video Coding

• Motion compensated video compression
• MPEG-4, VCI algorithms, tools, profiles and levels, bit rates, statistical multiplexing

Multichannel Audio for HDTV

• Introduction to surround sound audio delivery systems
• Techniques and testing audio in production, contribution and transmission
• Consumer playback

Displays - the key driver for HDTV

• Display technologies and latest developments
• Picture quality
• Flat panel TV market outlook
• Display issues in TV production

Receivers

• Hardware and software architectures
• Silicon solutions Security and Conditional Access requirements
• PVR functionalities
• Product evolution Market expectations and forecasts  

Measurements

• Colour Space
• Physical layer measurements
• Transport stream compliance testing for H.264 and VC1

• £875 - Standard rate
• £825 - Early bird rate for payment received one month before the course date

• £800 - IET, Digital Television Group and Royal Television Society members for payment received one month before the course date (proof of membership needed)
