The 4th European Conference on Smart Sensing and Context (EuroSSC) will be held on September 16-18, 2009 at the University of Surrey in Guildford, United Kingdom.
Smart Sensing and Context are the key enablers for smarter autonomous systems, providing transparent technologies to realise the vision of ubiquitous computing, intelligent services and networking. (Wireless) sensor and actuator networks, tightly integrated into the fabric of the Internet – a Real World Internet – provide the underlying manifestation of the real world into the digital world. The realisation of this Real World Internet leads to emergence of smart environments enabled by networks of sensors and actuators to capture and infer user's needs. Networked smart sensors recognise context from raw data and utilise it in a variety of smart applications and services. Higher-level context can be inferred locally/remotely by combining and abstracting information from smart sensors.
This annual conference explores new techniques, algorithms, architectures, protocols, services, and user aspects utilising context and context-aware services and applications. Topics coverage include smart sensing, context recognition, and context processing in the framework of a Real World Internet. Of growing interest are methods and principles for context abstraction and processing, quality of context, machine-interpretable representation of context, context-aware service platforms, and horizontalisation of context information access to leverage smart surroundings for a wide range of applications rather than single closed systems.
EuroSSC 2009 aims to bring researchers from both academia and industry with different levels of backgrounds to explore the latest findings and state-of-the-art developments in technology, human and user aspects:
- Technology and system aspects: concerning intelligent sensors, sensor and actuator networks, information processing for a new generation of context enabled devices, Real World Internet, and smart environments.
- Human and user aspects: exploring web-based scenarios, embedded applications and interaction methods for context-aware and pro-active distributed applications made possible by the diffusion of ambient communication, cooperating objects, and Human-Computer interaction technologies.
We welcome submission of original and unpublished technical papers, posters, and demonstration papers covering all areas related to smart surroundings, context-awareness, networked embedded sensor and actuator systems and the Real World Internet.

All submitted papers will be judged based on their novelty, clarity, and relevance through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers.
Authors of accepted submissions will have the opportunity to update their submissions based on the reviews before the final electronic copy is due. EuroSSC 2009 requires electronic submission. Reviewers will be instructed to maintain the confidentiality of all materials for submitted papers throughout the entire reviewing process. Submissions should contain no information that will be proprietary or confidential at the time of publication.
Full papers should not exceed 14 pages in length, LNCS format. Technical Papers are peer reviewed. Accepted papers will be included in the Conference Proceedings. Proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). The proceedings will also be made available through the digital library.
Posters and Demonstrations
Posters should present recent and on-going research in smart sensing and context area. The poster submissions should include a 4-page (LNCS format) description of the current research. The demonstrations also require a 4-page (LNCS format) submission to describe the presented work. Accepted submissions for posters and demonstrations will be printed in the adjunct conference proceedings. The submitted works will be presented at the conference poster and demonstration session.
